I’ve owned bonsai trees for 25 years and began my work in ceramics 10 years ago. Since then, I’ve gone deeper and deeper down the 'rabbit hole' of the science of ceramics. Experimenting is what drives me forwards - whether it is in shape and form of the pot; the process of making; the composition of different clays; or where my headspace is to be found frequently - the chemistry of glazes.

I make pots because I love doing so - it really is as simple as that. Choosing a pot can also be simple - find a pot you like and put your tree in it. However, in this series of blog posts, I hope to explain the range of factors that you may want to consider when making your decision about the container for your tree. It is a cliche to say that a bonsai without a pot is just a tree (this is technically true as bonsai literally means ‘tree in a pot’). A bonsai pot isn’t really a bonsai pot either unless there is a tree in it. However, I’m also of the opinion that we should display our bonsai pots as artefacts in their own right. Thus elevating the art of bonsai pottery to a par with studio ceramics.
